This is an anomaly localized in the gray matter of the spinal chord. Small tubular cavities (“syrinx” is the Greek word for “tube”) form in the gray matter and sometimes they merge. Usually they occur on the neck and upper-chest part of the spinal chord. These cavities damage the gray matter.
Various symptoms occur due to the damage, for example defective sensitivity to pain, cold and heat, manifestations of peripheral paralysis, manifestations of muscular atrophy – especially of the upper extremities, and more complicated healing of skin wounds.
